Why do people smoke?
Most people start smoking when they are in their teens and demote their body to a reliance on nicotine. Then they just keep going until you wake up to realize; "Hell, has it been 5 years already?"
Experimentation - Theres nothing wrong with trying a cigarette. It is normal as humans to be curious about the unknown and to set out and experience different things which is a great part of our own nature. However cigarettes have a catch, their addictive nature can very subtlety turn an experience into a pattern.
Stress buster myth - Your body and mind are more than capable of handling stress and you do not need any alkaloid like nicotine to lend support. When your brain becomes addicted to nicotine, it becomes weaker, you become stressed far more easily and because of this reliance, your brain is weaker to combat stress.
But as you quit, your brain forgets about the "help" from nicotine and does handles stress on its own. |
"It's been said a million times..."
The Feel Good Syndrome - Cigarettes are often identified with the “cool factor” and so it is a great way to impress others if you can delicately balance the cigarette between two of your fingers and blow up a puff of smoke while you are in your friends' circle.
- You know why you should stop smoking,
- You know it’s expensive,
- You know it’s a nasty habit and,
- You know it’s taking its toll on your health...
- You know sooner or later your luck will run out.
...but can you stop?

Many smokers start in their teens
Peer pressure - During the age of confusing youth, one just has to take a puff or else face the danger of being branded a “chicken” or other silly name. Evidence shows that around 50 percent of those who start smoking in adolescent years go on to smoke for 15 to 20 years. Those who pressure their friends now, and those that may have pressured you, did not understand the consequences of their actions.
Availability - Cigarettes are available every where and almost anybody can get them. Studies show that underage smokers are 22-times more likely to convince fellow smokers to purchase cigarettes for them than non-smokers.
